Snowflake Challenge Day 5

I don't anymore, but I used to play the trombone. I played it for eleven years, from sixth grade through college. I was never very good, but that wasn't the point. I knew I didn't want to be a musician, but I did love being a part of the band and making so many friends. In fact, most of the friends that I am still in touch with from college, and even high school, were in the band with me. There is just something about spending thirteen hours a day in 100+ degree weather marching sweatily around a field that builds a bond.
Band also gave me another fandom in a way. It taught me to love sports. I don't watch as much as I used to, but that time spent in the stands watching college football and basketball led to a love of sport. I challenge anyone to spend a season watching UK Basketball in Rupp Arena and not come away bleeding as blue as can be. It was more than that though, some of the guys took to calling me "Coach" because I learned all the stats and the history.
Of course, having the university say, "You're a reliable sort, how would you like us to pay for you to go to the NCAA tournament in NYC (or New Orleans, or Atlanta, or St. Louis, or Minneapolis, or, or, or...) didn't hurt either. Awesome tourism and great sports on my univeristy's dime? Yes, please.
I haven't touched my horn in years, but it's not the playing I miss. I miss those trips with friends. I miss sitting in the stands in winter, starving because we are losing another game in overtime, not because that part was fun, but because the people made it so.

I did marching band for 12 years (high school, undergrad, and grad school). I really miss it. I was in basketball band (Known as the Hoop Troop at Louisiana Tech where I went) for the 5 years it took me to get my undergrad. Those were some of the most fun times I've ever had.
The Hoop Troop was infamous while I was in it. We even had a few fouls called against us. We were known throughout the NCAA, and other teams hated coming to the TAC because we were so loud.
I was a music ed. major, so I learned to play just about every instrument. I have a trombone, and used to be able to play it okay. Haven't touched it in years though. I think my hubby plays it more that I ever did. Of Course, I'm a flute player, and played piccolo in the band. I play occasionally, but not as much as I used to.

That's really cool that you played too. I knew there was a reason I liked you...even if you were a woodwind. ;)
