Snowflake Challenge Day 15

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

How do you choose just one thing for this? My entire life has been about fandom in one way or another. I mean my parents took me to Star Trek conventions when I was in elementary school. Whether it was Buffy with my high school friends, sports with the guys in college, Harry Potter fic reading, watching anime with my brother, the Hawaii Five-0 online fandom, etc. I have always been doing something with fandom.

Because of fandom I have met new friends and gotten to know old friends better. I have gone to Dragon*Con four times with some of my dearest friends from college. I have been inspired to write an amazing amount. Fandom is, in some ways, the largest part of my life. My family and friends, both in person and online, are all fans of something and not afraid to embrace the geeky lifestyle.

So, I could literally discuss a million things here, but I won't. Instead I'll share a happy memory about Smallville of all things. When I was in graduate school my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] shadynaiad and I would get together every Thursday (I think it was Thursday, but it doesn't matter it was once a week) after I got off my internship. We would hang out at her apartment and watch my Smallville DVDs for hours just reveling in the blatant Clark/Lex slash. We loved Lex and generally just loved a show that didn't make us think too hard after a week of grad school.

Some weeks we would get up to other fandom related shenanigans as well. One week we baked and decorated cupcakes as a form of fan art for a favorite Harry Potter fic that we were both reading and sent pictures to the author. Then we ate them while watching Lex be awesome. LOL.

Here are the cupcakes we made:

Draco's poisoned fairy cakes from A Year Like None Other by Aspen in the Sunlight

Basically we just had a grand old time fangirling and being silly and not worrying about grad school. I often say that [livejournal.com profile] shadynaiad is like my fandom Yoda. She introduced me to the concept of fanfic and to slash and to online fandom in general. Before I met her, I was a fangirl and a geek, but thanks to her I am active online about it. So you might want to either thank her or curse her depending on how well you like me. ;)

Snowflake Challenge Day 14

In your own space, ask for help. Need a beta? Always wanted to learn how to make a vid? a fanmix? icons? Maybe you’d want to have someone cheering for you while you work on an upcoming big bang or fannish bingo? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I feel like I have already asked for so much during the course of this challenge, but I suppose that what I could use now is cheerleading. I finally got a real start on my [livejournal.com profile] avengers_bang last night and it is going to be a new and difficult writing experience for me.

Structurally the time loop will make me have to write differently, but, more than that, so much of it is about the character of Tony Stark instead of having a more relationship centered focus. I am a bit worried about doing it right. At the same time I am excited about my idea and hope I can pull it off. Also, I have so much trouble writing long fic and my attention wanders. The rough draft isn't due until March, but I really want to be done with it by the time the [livejournal.com profile] c_im_bigbang Reverse Bang author sign ups open at the end of February.

So yeah, some cheerleading would be nice. I'd also love to know what music you all associate with Tony. I dug through my iTunes and a bunch of fanmixes last night, but I'd love to know if there is a song that you think just screams Tony.

Thanks bunches in advance. :D

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For today's challenge I thought I would share one moment from my two primary fandoms that perfectly illustrate why I love my OTPs in each of the fandoms. The canonical evidence that takes the subtext and makes it text, "proving" the pairing to me.

Hawaii Five-0 (Steve/Danny)

Airhearts!!, by fiercelynormal

♠ The airhearts moment in episode 1.20. The entire episode is amazing but this moment imploded the fandom and for good reason. Danny literally drew an air heart for an injured Steve who was being taken away on a helicopter. Even now I sometimes have to see it to believe that it's canon and not fanon. My boys love each other! On screen!

Avengers (Steve/Tony)

♠ This is from Steve's public funeral. First Tony got too choked up to give the eulogy and then he flat out says that the day Steve came out of the ice was the best day of his life. Tony so loves Steve, there's no question about it. Also, I might go cry because all the stuff around the Civil War and the Steve's death just HURTS. But I'm a total angst whore, so it hurts good.

Snowflake Challenge Day 10

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I would like to talk about [livejournal.com profile] tailoredshirt. She writes lots of excellent fic full of great dialogue and a lot of humor, but I really want to highlight her videos. She has not created a video that I didn't love and I truly believe that she is the best vidder in the Hawaii Five-0 fandom. The time and effort she takes to seamlessly match music with the clips is evident. Her videos are flawless and truly highlight the "art" part of "fan art."

You can find her videos here. Every single one is worth a watch and her love for all of the characters shines through in every second.

Snowflake Challenge Day 11

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some." Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I would love recs for any good DC comics, JLA/JLU, Young Justice, or Smallville fic. I am just starting to read some in these fandoms and am finding it difficult to find good fic. I would prefer long and meaty fic that are not significantly AU (I am not fond of career change AUs or AUs that significantly change the character relationships). I like slash and would generally prefer fics that include the Batfamily (except in Smallville). Other than that, I'm open to anything good. :D

Snowflake Challenge Day 12

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I know that the Avengers movie fandom is really taking off, but in my obsessive reading a few months ago I found a lot of wonderful comic fic and resources that made me love Steve/Tony so much more. Before I got into this fandom, I knew nothing about the comics, but I think that some knowledge of them really enhances my love for the characters. Also, some of the comic based fic are absolutely excellent and shouldn't be missed. Here are a few of the best things I found for someone new to the comic-verse:

Steve/Tony Ship Manifesto by [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon

♠ This manifesto hits all the high points of their relationship over decades worth of comics and is well worth the read. Their relationship simultaneously breaks your heart and makes you smile. Seriously, this is a must read. If you aren't sold on Steve and Tony because you haven't seen them on screen together, take a gander at this. It will convince you.

Captain America/Iron Man Slashy Moments List

♠ If you are like me and find 60 or so years of comic back story a bit daunting, take a look at this. The great people at [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman maintain a collection of comic scans that highlight the friendship and slashy interactions between Steve and Tony in the comics. Here you will find the infamous bagel moment, that time Steve rode Tony like a pony, and all the heartbreak around the Marvel Civil War. In my opinion, looking through these scans is an awesome way to spend an afternoon and get a better understanding of the characters in the process.

Resurrection, Reconstruction, and Redemption by [livejournal.com profile] seanchai and [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon | PG-13 | 94,339 | Doom brings Steve back from the dead. Hijinks ensue, some of which might vaguely be considered plot. Surprisingly, this isn't actually crack-fic - it's just Marvel.

♠ This is the first in a long series of excellent comic based fic set shortly after Steve's death. I first read it when I was just getting into the fandom and am ashamed to admit that a lot of the characters (the other non-movie Avengers) were like OCs to me, but that was okay. I could still follow the story and completely fall for the tragic post-Marvel Civil War love story that was the heart. This was the first of many post-Civil War stories I read and I adore the angst and emotion in them.

Cap/Ironman: Civil War Battlefield by Billie4Mozzarella

♠ Speaking of the Marvel Civil War, this video is amazing. I literally can not watch it without crying. The creator used still comic scans (and only one photoshopped pic) to tell the story of the Civil War and how it impacted Steve and Tony's relationship. It is seriously heartbreaking and the song choice was excellent. I don't even have words for the emotions I get watching this video.

Snowflake Challenge Day 8

In your own space, talk about a talent (or talents) you have. Everyone's got something they're good at. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This one is the hardest one so far, because while I know that there are things that I'm good at that word "talent" really makes me pause. It feels like I am tooting my own horn to claim something as a talent and it also seems presumptuous because the things I do, others do better. Oh well, the point of this was to be challenged.

In recent years, I have come to realize that I deal well with people. When I was working at the library I was often confronted with stressed out, rude, even irate people and I didn't let myself get baited into arguments. I kept my cool and managed to help them. In fact, I'm pretty good at keeping my cool in stressful situations in general.

I've always been talented at academic things. Other than math and foreign languages, I've always felt that school came easily. And I wasn't bad at math or languages, I just didn't like them as much. Lol.

I also hate to mention writing because there are so many people on my flist alone who I WISH I was as good as, but I really do feel like I am good at cutting to the emotion of the characters. I think that I manage to write emotion realistically without going over the top and that is something that I am proud of. I may not be the best writer, but I think I do have a talent for that aspect.

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Drop a link to your wish-list in this post. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Well, since you asked:

♠ Art. I have always wanted art of any sort for any of my fics. I would adore anything: banners, digital manips, traditional art, fanvids, anything at all. I've always felt that one of the greatest honors is for something I write to inspire other people to create art and every single bit of art done for me in the past has been much treasured.

♠ Podfic. I've never had any of my stories recorded, but would be hugely honored if anyone was moved to do so. Hearing something I've written would literally blow me away.

♠ Fic. At the moment I have been craving fic featuring father and son relationships, in particular between Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, but all I seem to find is slash. I would love recs to any fic that deals with the father-son dynamic (the good, the bad, and the ugly) between them. I would also love fic featuring the father-son relationship between Bruce and Alfred, Bruce and any of the other Robins, or between Connor and Clark or Lex. Recs would be great but if anyone is motivated to write me a fic feel free. :D

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.

This is hard for me. I read a lot of fic and frankly, I'll read almost anything and am not shy about it. At all. But, I finally came up with some fic that were not my norm that impacted me in some way.

Marvel
Chaos War by [livejournal.com profile] astolat | NC-17 | 34,203 | Thor/Loki | It was never easy to find Loki when he wanted to hide, but he wasn't doing a particularly good job of it at the moment. Probably he didn't think anyone from Asgard would be wasting their time hunting for him while the shining ones churned their way steadily through all the realm. | Warnings: Dubious Consent, Incest

♠ Before I read this, I was wanting to read Loki fic, but I wasn't sold on the idea of Thor/Loki, partially because I was still coming to terms with the incestuous aspect. Before this, I had read (and written) incest pairings before, but almost exclusively in the angsty or porny one-shot way, not a novel where the relationship actually grows and develops, but the sheer number of kudos and comments on this fic made me try it. It blew me away. It has one of the best Loki's I've read and I just adored the entire thing. After reading it, I have no problem reading Thor/Loki as a pairing, in fact I quite enjoy it. I may even write it. :D

Hawaii Five-0
The Blood and Love Theory by [livejournal.com profile] portraitofafool | NC-17 | 6521 | Steve/Danny | It started as a theory, a curiosity Danny wanted to explore further and something he could do for Steve because he seemed to need it. Then Danny started to need it, too. | Warnings: Bloodplay, Knifeplay, S/M

♠ I had read fic that contained these elements before, mostly late at night and just PWPs, but when I read this I was blown away. This fic slowly showed the development in Steve and Danny's relationship that led to them both enjoying S/M. The way she painted Danny in particular was astounding. For the first time, I really bought this type of a relationship as a believable development of the characters.

Melody, Unchained by [livejournal.com profile] somehowunbroken | NC-17 | 6375 | Steve/Mary | They're not hurting anybody. | Warnings: Underage, Incest

♠ This fic belongs here for several reasons. First off, as a rule I don't like reading about Mary, but enjoyed reading her here. Secondly, underage sibling incest is not something I normally admit to reading even if I do (glances askance at the Weasleys), but this one was so well done that it prompted me to want to write my own take on Steve and Mary's fucked up childhood. That's right, this fic prompted me to write my own underage sibling incest. It also made me kind of ship Steve/Mary just a little. This fic moved me creatively in ways I never would have expected.

So there you go, three fic that changed my mind, led me in new creative directions, and pushed my boundaries. :D

I don't anymore, but I used to play the trombone. I played it for eleven years, from sixth grade through college. I was never very good, but that wasn't the point. I knew I didn't want to be a musician, but I did love being a part of the band and making so many friends. In fact, most of the friends that I am still in touch with from college, and even high school, were in the band with me. There is just something about spending thirteen hours a day in 100+ degree weather marching sweatily around a field that builds a bond.

Band also gave me another fandom in a way. It taught me to love sports. I don't watch as much as I used to, but that time spent in the stands watching college football and basketball led to a love of sport. I challenge anyone to spend a season watching UK Basketball in Rupp Arena and not come away bleeding as blue as can be. It was more than that though, some of the guys took to calling me "Coach" because I learned all the stats and the history.

Of course, having the university say, "You're a reliable sort, how would you like us to pay for you to go to the NCAA tournament in NYC (or New Orleans, or Atlanta, or St. Louis, or Minneapolis, or, or, or...) didn't hurt either. Awesome tourism and great sports on my univeristy's dime? Yes, please.

I haven't touched my horn in years, but it's not the playing I miss. I miss those trips with friends. I miss sitting in the stands in winter, starving because we are losing another game in overtime, not because that part was fun, but because the people made it so.

I used this opportunity to friend an author I really enjoy and have chatted with around the fandom, but have been too shy to actually follow. :D
